Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in West Hattiesburg, Mississippi. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our specialty is hair analysis, with testing centers in cities across the nation ready to conduct these tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically required, whether from your head or body. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, the practice of drug testing has increasingly included hair follicle analysis. Many companies, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor this over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation services all utilize hair tests. A key advantage is the extended detection period that can cover up to 90 days, along with supervised collection, making manipulation nearly impossible. For identifying recent drug use—under 5 days—urine tests remain the best choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of the hair strand capture biomarkers, offering a long-term record of alcohol and drugs. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal substances up to around three months back. Collecting hair is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It's advisable to weigh the hair on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When 'head hair' is mentioned, it refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' encompasses all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four critical steps in processing a drug test result in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of incorporating a sample into a lab’s system, which includes ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary check for drug presence. While Screening is economical for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court validity. Presumptive positives from Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample reflects a presumptively positive from Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and processed for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations as compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging technique to perform.

Positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the lab process falls under the scrutiny of CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect recent usage.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage history: Hair tests can illustrate a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate usage: It takes nearly 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly named "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In West Hattiesburg, MS, hair follicle testing is gaining recognition over traditional urine tests. Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in West Hattiesburg, MS, captures drug use over an extensive period, up to 90 days. This capability grants employers a more complete understanding of an applicant or employee’s substance habits, surpassing traditional methods and offering a broader perspective on past drug use, which is invaluable when assessing reliability or suitability for a role.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
