Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Winchester, Mississippi. Specializing in hair or alcohol testing, we have centers available nationwide to conduct these crucial tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is required. Our tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly commonplace for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. This method benefits employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation due to its extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, through a monitored collection process, making it challenging to tamper with. Urine tests remain best for detecting recent substance use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has garnered recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair can capture a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the breadth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield approximately 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for initial screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, and those surpassing 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. We advise weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. By head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to any other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the preliminary incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's system. This procedure includes confirming that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not offered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate the presence of drugs in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be corroborated to ensure legal admissibility. Any samples that exhibit a presumptively positive result during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptively positive result in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening poses the greatest challenge in methodology.

Confirmation for any positive screening results is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use across a span of time, beyond merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite often being labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand and not the underlying follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
