Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Airport Drive, Missouri. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis and operates testing centers across all U.S. cities, ready to perform such tests. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair can be used. These tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly replaced urine-based methods. This switch has been driven by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero drug tolerance, courts, and probation officers often rely on hair tests for their accuracy. The advantage of a hair test lies in its extended 90-day detection window. It's collected under supervision, ensuring authenticity and reliability, although urine tests remain superior for detecting very recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a significant method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Over time, hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, allowing them to reflect a prolonged record of alcohol and substance use. A sample collected near the scalp can provide up to roughly a three-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. The collection process is straightforward, the possibility of tampering is minimal, and the shipping process is uncomplicated.

Collected near the scalp, a 1.5-inch sample with roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) yields 100mg, perfect for both screening and confirmation. For EtG assessments, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair forms (facial, underarm, etc.).

Steps in the Process

The four primary stages in the lab processing of drug tests are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This step consists of ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, providing a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry not available via electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails an initial swift examination for drug presence. Though Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive Screening needs confirmation to be valid in legal scenarios. Any Screening results that are likely positive require follow-up confirmation.

If the Screening process indicates a likely positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug analysis the most challenging process to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples likely positive are washed before Confirmation when necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and is certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, as opposed to the shorter window seen with urine tests.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair tests are very resistant to manipulation, enhancing their accuracy.
  • Details historical usage: They can show a drug usage trend over time, not merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot reveal recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite being popularly termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
