Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Alba, Missouri. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities ready in various cities nationwide. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head is needed for these tests. Hair analysis can cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing preferences.

Drug testing methods have progressively embraced hair follicle testing more often. Employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists increasingly mandate hair tests over standard urine models. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers with zero-drug tolerance stances, courts, and probationary individuals. A key advantage is its extended drug use detection window, usually spanning 90 days, with collection under supervision, making deceit nearly impossible. Yet, urine tests remain the most precise for recent 5-day drug use screening.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug use through embedding biomarkers in the strands' fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers a nearly 3-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, perfect for screening and confirmation. For EtG, extensions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. The specimen can be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses any other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four central phases in processing a drug test result in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the sample's entry into a laboratory's system. It involves ensuring that the sample is securely sealed and correctly shipped, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and inputting any leftover data not covered by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening entails an initial rapid evaluation for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical solution for excluding drug usage in most samples, any positive results must be verified for court acceptance. Presumptively positive screened samples need additional confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations than with other strategies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most intricate method to execute.

Positive screenings are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to compromise: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historic insights: It provides a record of drug use over time, not solely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Usually, hair drug tests cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand and not the follicle located beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
