At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Atlanta, Missouri. Whether you need a test for drugs or alcohol, we are experts in hair testing, with nationwide centers ready to assist. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Our tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has become more prevalent in drug screening. It's increasingly demanded by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts as an alternative to urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by those enforcing strict no-drug policies. Key advantages include a detection period of up to 90 days and a nearly foolproof collection method. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests are more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a historical record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When hair is taken near the roots, it can present an approximately 90-day detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-on tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is preferred. We advise using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen's weight. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. Concerning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing drug test results in a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial sample processing within a laboratory's system. This phase checks if the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry if not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. This cost-effective method efficiently eliminates drug absence in most samples, but a positive screen must be verified to be legal in court. Samples presumed to be positive in Screening do require further confirmation.

If a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction stage. Here, lower concentration drug extraction is performed compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid). This is what makes hair drug testing a more sophisticated process.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that show presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection range: Hair drug tests detect usage history for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer shorter detection spans.
  • Challenging to manipulate: The difficulty in altering a hair drug test ensures more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical data proof: It offers insights into drug usage patterns over time, not just recent habits.

Limitations:

  • No immediate detection: Drugs become traceable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: In comparison to other drug testing methods, hair drug tests are often costlier.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
