In Atlas, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing makes us your go-to choice. With testing facilities nationwide, we perform hair tests requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or follow tailored hair testing protocols.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction as an increasingly popular method. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and professionals in substance abuse now favor hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, courts, and probationary contexts heavily rely on these tests. The key advantage is the extended detection window, up to 90 days, collected under observation, and difficult to manipulate. However, for drug use within the preceding five days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands, hair offers a prolonged record of substance use. When samples are obtained near the scalp, they can reveal drug and alcohol use within roughly a three-month timeframe. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary checks, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If head hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. ‘Head hair’ refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas ‘body hair’ encompasses all other types (like facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The primary phases in a lab's drug test analysis include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the sample's preliminary integration into the lab's system. This step verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. While it is an economical approach to exclude drug usage for most samples, any positive screen must be verified for legal acceptability. Samples that test positive should undergo additional confirmation.

During the Screening stage, if a sample tests positive, further hair is removed from the original sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than those typical in other methods like urine or oral fluids, which makes hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation for any positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation, if necessary. The end-to-end lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair tests can indicate drug use for a maximum of 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely tough, which enhances result reliability.
  • Tracks historical usage: It traces substance use over an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify immediate use: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result inconsistency: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
