Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bell City, Missouri. If a hair or alcohol test is required, we excel in hair testing with centers spread across all cities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. Our hair tests analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized as needed.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly employed in drug testing methods. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists opt for hair drug tests instead of typical urine tests. These tests are crucial for zero-tolerance drug policies, court orders, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, going up to 90 days, through observed collections, making cheating nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain most effective for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing strands. When gathered near the scalp, a hair sample can reveal drug and alcohol use over nearly a 90-day period. Collection of hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and easily shipped.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and validation. For EtG, supplementary checks, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler's scale is advised for specimen measurement. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be collected. The term head hair specifically denotes scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to initially incorporating a sample into a lab's system. This stage involves confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for detecting drug abuse. It is a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug use in numerous samples, however, a positive result must be confirmed to be legally valid. Any samples that are tentatively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a tentative positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair in much lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening outcomes is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing pre-confirmation as deemed necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated based on both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days in contrast to urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: It is notably hard to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can convey a trend of substance use over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It typically requires 5-7 days for substances to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually more costly compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistency in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth might influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
