Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Bella Villa, MO. Specializing in hair testing, we operate nationwide centers for drug or alcohol hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. We offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals increasingly choose hair tests over urine ones. They are favored by those with zero-tolerance policies due to their up-to-90-day detection window and reliability. Though for recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug presence by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can yield up to nearly a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 strands of hair (approximate size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair pertain only to scalp hair. Body hair applies to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This process comprises confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective strategy to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for court admissibility. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a further confirmation.

If a sample reveals a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are drawn from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug screening represents the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which feature a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug residues in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination itself assesses the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
