Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Bertrand, Missouri. For those in need, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing with centers across all U.S. cities offering this service. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle testing. Companies, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts often prefer this over the traditional urine test. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers use these tests. Hair follicle tests stand out for their extended detection window of up to 90 days, followed under strict observation, and are almost impossible to evade. Despite this, urine tests are still best for detecting drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the hair shaft as it grows. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol consumption for a duration of up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and it is easy to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 strands (almost the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, and or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equal quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of evaluating a drug test result in the laboratory consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial steps of processing a sample into a laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any other data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening process acts as an initial rapid check for drug abuse; it is cost-efficient in ruling out drug use in most samples. However, any screen that tests positive must undergo a confirmation test to be valid in a court setting. Samples that initially test positive in Screening necessitate a confirmation step.

If the Screening stage indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this part, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods like urine or saliva, making hair testing a challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of all positive screening outcomes is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation if required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes review by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) under Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 certification standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug screenings can identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection time of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating hair drug tests is quite difficult, yielding more trustworthy results.
  • Historical insight: It provides insights into a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent drug intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drug presence to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other testing approaches.
  • Result deviations: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the testing process actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
