Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Birch Tree, Missouri. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with testing centers available in cities nationwide to conduct hair tests. Hair from the crown or body, typically 1.5 to 2 inches, is used to analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

The hair follicle drug test has gained popularity in recent years as a method for drug testing. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer this form instead of the traditional urine test. Employers enforcing drug-free policies, legal institutions, and probationary programs use hair follicle tests. A significant advantage is its longer detection window, usually up to 90 days, ensuring observed collection and minimizing cheating attempts. However, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has become recognized as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-duration record of alcohol and other drugs by securing biomarkers in the strands of the developing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hairs (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair might be utilized. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial inclusion of a sample into a lab’s system. This incorporates confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched appropriately, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary swift check for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug use on the majority of samples, a positive screen needs validation to be admissible in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging procedure to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo cleaning before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, making the findings more dependable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can show a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other drug screening techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often termed as “hair follicle tests,” the test itself evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
