Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Black Jack, Missouri. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol testing, we are experts in the field, with nationwide centers able to carry out these tests. It's necessary to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for most cases. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been adopted as a preferred method for drug screening. It's often demanded by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals as an alternative to standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation programs opt for hair follicle tests due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days. These tests involve observed collections and are extremely hard to tamper with. However, for substances used within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates long-term evidence of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for substances such as alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to dispatch.

An inch-and-a-half sample containing approximately 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from just above the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, additional options, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. For precise measurement, it’s suggested to use a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair imply scalp hair exclusively. Body hair denotes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory’s framework, including validating that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data collection absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening indicates an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient measure to negate drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be verified to hold up in a legal scenario. Samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

In the event a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, a larger portion of hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening poses the most challenges to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Each sample with presumptive positivity is cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can trace drug intake for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, promoting more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a consecutive pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Insufficient for recent usage: It typically requires 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
