Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Bonne Terre, Missouri. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol tests is backed by a network of testing centers nationwide, ready to serve your needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. We can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle analysis. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over urine tests. This method benefits zero-tolerance policies and criminal justice settings, offering a 90-day drug use detection window. Observed collection ensures integrity, making cheating difficult. However, for detecting recent drug use, urine tests remain optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a substantial history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drug presence. Hair is easy to collect, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advisable. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, a corresponding amount of body hair may be utilized. In terms of head hair, our focus is exclusively on scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The drug testing laboratory process is comprised of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample within a lab’s system. The process verifies correct sample sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial assessment for illegal drug presence. Although Screening is efficient for excluding drug use for most samples, any positive findings must be verified for legal acceptability. Samples yielding presumptive positives in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation step.

Upon a presumptive positive result during Screening, further hair is extracted from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. This step extracts drugs from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), positioning hair drug assessment as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS, positive Screening results proceed to Confirmation. Before confirmation, any samples that tested positive are washed accordingly. The process sequence from Accessioning through Confirmation is audited in congruence with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments can uncover drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, contrasting with the shorter span of urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: The difficulty in deceiving a hair drug test enhances result fidelity.
  • Historical insights: Hair testing provides a timeline of substance use, beyond just recent activities.

Challenges:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis generally incurs higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair pigmentation and personal growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Remark: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the exam analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Bonne Terre, MO
Hair testing offers enhanced detection capabilities over traditional urine tests, providing a longer window of drug use history. While urine tests are limited to recent use, hair analysis can detect substances over weeks, bolstering its reliability. This accuracy equips employers with a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance habits.

Employers in Bonne Terre, MO, benefit greatly from the superior detection hair tests offer. While urine tests are easily susceptible to tampering, hair analysis provides an unassailable method, reducing the risk of false negatives and ensuring truly drug-free work environments.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing delivers a far-reaching view into an individual's drug use, spanning up to 90 days. This extended detection window means employers gain a comprehensive understanding of substance use habits, rather than a snapshot. It assists companies in making more informed hiring and retention decisions.

By adopting hair follicle testing, organizations in Bonne Terre, MO, capture a longer history of use, ensuring that diligence in maintaining a drug-free workplace is enhanced. This prolonged scope differentiates it sharply from short-window urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
