Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Bonnots Mill, Missouri. For those requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our centers specialize in these services nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is typically required. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a staple for substance detection. Many employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists prefer it over traditional urine assessments. This method is favored by employers enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. Its main advantage is a 90-day detection window, collected efficiently and difficult to falsify. Conversely, urine tests remain best for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, it can offer approximately a three-month detection window for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to ship.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for testing. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is recommended. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. On the other hand, body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug testing encompasses four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial intake of a sample into the laboratory system. This comprises confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary analysis for commonly abused drugs. While this method is cost-effective to initially rule out drug use for most samples, any positive result requires confirmation for admissibility in legal proceedings. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. In this stage, substances are extracted at much lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing a complex process.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. The end-to-end laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike the shorter window with urine tests.
  • Challenge to cheat: Cheating a hair test is quite challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks usage history: Provides a record of drug use over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Can't identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and growth rate can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
