At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide comprehensive hair follicle drug and alcohol testing services in Bull Creek, Missouri. Specializing in hair testing, our centers are located across many cities nationwide ready to perform your required tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is sufficient for testing. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other personalized options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is essential for zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial situations, and monitoring probationers. With a detection window of up to 90 days, the hair test offers thorough insights. However, for recent drug use within a 5-day window, urine tests maintain their accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records long-term data on alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in the hair strands as they grow. Collected near the root, hair can reveal up to a 3-month span of drug and alcohol intake. It's easy to collect, rather tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) taken nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verifying purposes. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferred. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement is advisable. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Summary

The primary steps in a lab processing a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Verification.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is integrated into the lab’s workflow. It involves validating that the sample has been correctly sealed and transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any further data entry not covered by an electronic documentation system.

Screening serves as the initial rapid assessment for drugs. Though Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug usage in most cases, a positive Screening result demands further verification to be legally binding. Any samples that are tentatively positive during Screening undergo an additional confirmation.

When a sample tests positive during the Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This stage involves drug extraction at significantly lower concentrations compared to alternatives (such as urine or saliva), which makes hair drug analysis a challenging method to conduct.

Verification of a positive screen is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All samples marked as positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab workflow from Accessioning to Verification is scrutinized according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the accreditation towards ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug screening:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can register drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a limited detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage history: It offers an account of drug usage over time, not just recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs typically become traceable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to be pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
