Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Bunceton, Missouri. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair testing with facilities available across all cities nationwide that conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or elsewhere on the body can be used. Tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Conducted by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation, this test offers a longer drug detection window up to 90 days, with strict observation during collection, making it nearly impossible to alter. For drug use detection within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is being recognized as an impactful method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to approximately 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to alter, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch specimen comprising around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample required for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable amount of body hair may be collected. When referencing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step confirms that the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data that might be absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal standing. Any samples that are likely positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample is likely positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation in the Extraction stage. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging technique to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All likely positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The comprehensive laboratory assessment from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timespan.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides chronological data: It can illustrate a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally more costly than alternate drug testing approaches.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements such as hair color and unique differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself scrutinizes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
