At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Cabool, Missouri. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing spans across our nationwide locations, ready to serve you. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 inches of hair from the crown of one's head or body hair can be analyzed for diverse substances including drugs and alcohol or customized test options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence in drug screening procedures. Many workplaces, legal entities, and substance professionals prefer this method over standard urine tests. The advantages of hair follicle drug testing include its extended detection timeframe of around 90 days. Furthermore, since sample collection is supervised, the method is almost foolproof. Nevertheless, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain superior in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting substance use, particularly drugs and alcohol. Hair retains biomarkers within the strands, offering a comprehensive history of substance consumption spanning up to three months when cut near the scalp. It is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hairs (equivalent to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields a quantity of 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing of the sample. If scalp hair is lacking, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair imply scalp hair exclusively. "Body hair" encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test at a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample within the lab's framework. This stage ensures the sample is appropriately sealed and transported, assigns it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial assessment for substance misuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective strategy to disqualify drug usage in most samples, a definitive affirmation is necessary for legal proceedings. Samples with positive indicators in Screening require further validation.

If the Screening stage results in a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are separated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of the hair drug screening process.

Confirmation follows any positive Screening outcomes, using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptively positive samples undergo cleansing prior to Confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning through Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests detect drug use for up to a 90-day span, unlike urine tests with shorter detection durations.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The challenge in cheating hair drug tests ensures results are more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: Capable of outlining usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to alternative methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests," the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
