Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Cairo, Missouri. Whether needing evaluation for drugs or alcohol, our experts in hair testing operate nationwide, with local centers ready to assist. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body. Hair evaluations accommodate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke hair testing demands.

Lately, there's been a shift towards using hair follicle drug tests. Legal entities, companies, and addiction specialists increasingly favor these over urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation utilize this method. The chief advantage lies in hair tests' extended detection, typically up to 90 days, and secure collection process, making them difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, for usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair sampling is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can reveal a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the structure of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to nearly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair sampling is easy to execute, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A segment of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be obtained. If mentioned, head hair refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial input of a sample into the lab’s framework. This encompasses confirming that the sample is securely sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for illicit drug use. Although Screening provides a cost-effective approach to negating drug use for most samples, any positive screen requires confirmation for judicial admissibility. Samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent detailed confirmation.

If a specimen tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for preparation during Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most rigorous methodology.

Validation of any positive results from Screening occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can find drug use over a span of up to 90 days, while urine tests have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Reduced chances of manipulation: Manipulating a hair test is extremely challenging, thereby enhancing the reliability of the outcomes.
  • Traces historical usage: It can outline a drug use pattern over a timeline, not merely recent consumptions.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days post-consumption for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair tests incur higher costs than other testing alternatives.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
