Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Caledonia, Missouri. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing and have facilities nationwide, including every city, to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or another body area is needed. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a favored method for drug testing. A growing number of employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests to standard urine tests. They are employed by companies with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. A significant advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period, generally up to 90 days, with observed collection that is almost impossible to tamper with. However, if the need is to detect drug use within the last five days, a urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for detecting substance use, as hair records a long-term history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within its fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair spans an approximately 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG enhancements or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. Should scalp hair be lacking, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. Reference to head hair specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The process in a lab for analyzing a drug test result consists of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning introduces a sample into the lab's system. This includes confirming the sample's packaging and transfer, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry necessary outside of an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening performs an initial examination for drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most cases, any positive results from Screening need confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation steps.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further processing. Drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening a complex procedure.

Confirmation of any positive screening result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS technology. All presumptive positive samples are washed if required before confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accredited standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can recognize drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine screenings have a shorter window.
  • Hard to deceive: Tampering with a hair drug test is very difficult, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Chronological data: It delivers insights into drug consumption patterns over time rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection unavailable: Typically, drugs become detectable in hair 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings generally entail higher costs than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this method examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
