In Cave, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Our centers are strategically located in various cities across the Nation, ensuring accessibility for all. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we're the experts in hair testing. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for most tests. Hair analysis can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

The popularity of hair follicle drug testing has surged among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals in recent years. This method is increasingly preferred over traditional urine tests. Employers, institutions, and probation programs favor hair testing to enforce zero-tolerance drug policies. With a detection period extending up to 90 days, hair tests offer significant benefits, ensuring results are collected under observation and are virtually tamper-proof. However, for detecting recent drug use, within the last five days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a reflection of prolonged alcohol and drug intake, capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the strands as they grow. When hair is taken close to the scalp, it offers a detection period of nearly three months for substances such as alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hairs, akin to the width of a #2 pencil, closest to the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity needed for both screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is permissible. By head hair, we imply scalp hair specifically. All other hair variants (facial, axillary, etc.) belong to body hair.

Process Overview

Drug test results undergo four primary stages in a lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a lab's framework. This step encompasses ensuring the sample's sealing and proper shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any other data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary check for potential drug abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to eliminating drug usage for most samples, a confirmed screen becomes requisite for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive samples from Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If during the Screening stage a sample is presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and conditioned for Extraction. During this stage, drug removal from hair occurs at a notably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), a reason why hair drug testing is considered the most intricate method.

The Confirmation stage of any screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptively positive hair samples are washed as required. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests detect substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection scope.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to manipulation, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides historical data: They show a pattern of drug consumption over extended periods, rather than just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests," this test evaluates the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
