Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Centerview, Missouri. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing, with testing facilities across the nation for conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be utilized. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

More recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, the judiciary, and probationary programs. Hair follicle tests provide a longer detection period for drug use, usually up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making tampering almost impossible. Yet, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. It offers a prolonged history by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. Hair collected near the scalp can reveal a detection span for alcohol and drugs of up to about 90 days. It's uncomplicated to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising 200 strands near the scalp can produce 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't present, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of logging the sample into the lab's system, including ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entry if the electronic chain of custody system doesn't provide it.

Screening is a rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it is a cost-effective method to dismiss drug use for most samples, a confirmed positive screen is required to be valid in court. Samples with a presumed positive in Screening need confirmation.

When a sample appears positive during Screening, additional hair is selected from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair in much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can unveil drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is considerably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over a duration, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inefficient for recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Results variability: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand itself that is analyzed, not the hair follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Centerview, MO. Hair testing offers numerous advantages over urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. It can trace drugs over extended periods and resists common tampering methods. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
