Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

In Centralia, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle analyses for drugs and alcohol. With locations across the nation, including all major cities, we specialize in offering expert hair testing services. Although hair from the head is generally preferred, body hair can also be used if the crown has at least 1.5 to 2 inches of growth. Our customizable hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other substances.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in the testing process. Courts, employers, and professionals in Substance Abuse are opting for hair tests over urine tests. These are chosen by employers who strictly prohibit drug use, court systems, and for those on probation. The main advantage of hair tests is a longer detection window of up to 90 days. Tests are observed during collection, making them tough to tamper with. For instances of drug use within five days, urine tests are still the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for tracking the use of drugs and alcohol. The strands of hair capture markers over time within their growing fibers, offering a prolonged timeline of substance use. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol usage for as long as three months. Gathering hair is straightforward, tampering with it is relatively challenging, and it is convenient for shipping.

A sample consisting of 1.5 inches of around 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg, which is the preferred amount for testing and verification. For examinations like EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of hair. Using a jeweler’s balance for weighing the sample is recommended. If hair from the scalp isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process in the lab for creating a drug test result involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This phase includes checking if the sample was correctly sealed and sent, giving it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing data entry not covered by electronic custody records.

Screening is a preliminary assessment to check for drugs. While Screening is efficient in excluding drug use in most samples, any positive results must be validated for legal acceptance. Any samples presumed positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample show a positive indication in Screening, additional hair from the original deposit is used for Extraction. Drugs are extracted at lower concentrations in hair than in other testing forms (urine, saliva), making hair screening complex.

Positive screenings undergo further checks using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumed positive samples are cleaned before validation if necessary. The whole process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is checked following both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, which exceeds the shorter windows offered by urine tests.
  • Hard to tamper: Hair tests are tough to cheat, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks usage history: It can reveal trends in use over time, unlike tests detecting only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs do not show up in hair for about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often known as "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
