Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Cherokee Pass, Missouri. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol examination you need, our specialty in hair testing is well-supported by our widespread national network of testing centers capable of executing hair examinations. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is required. Analyzing hair tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke options is our forte.

Over recent years, the inclusion of hair follicle drug testing in drug screening processes has gained momentum. It's preferred by many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts as a substitute for the conventional urine test. Employers with strict zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation often favor hair follicle tests. Its chief advantage lies in detecting drug usage over a significantly extended period—usually up to 90 days—with observed collection processes hard to circumvent. However, urine tests continue being the most precise for screening recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

The increasing reliance on hair analysis has elevated its status as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within its strands as it grows. By obtaining samples near the scalp, hair analysis can reveal drug and alcohol usage for an approximate period of three months. The collection process is straightforward, with a lower risk of tampering, and samples are easily transported.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hairs (akin to a #2 pencil's diameter) acquired close to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair—ideal for both screening and verification. For tests exceeding 10 panels, including EtG or other add-ons, a 150mg sample is preferred. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is advised for precise measurement. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four primary steps constitute the lab processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial step where samples are processed into the lab's database. This phase entails confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any outstanding data entries absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening represents a preliminary analysis for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical means to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result requires validation to hold up in legal settings. Samples indicating potential positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

During the Screening phase, if a sample shows potential positivity, additional hair is extracted from the initial supply for the Extraction process. In this stage, substances are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or saliva), underscoring the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Positive results from the Screening phase undergo Confirmatory testing via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potential positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. Each step from Accessioning to Confirmation is rigorously assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and standards accredited by ISO/IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Minimal opportunity for manipulation: It's challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage insight: It reveals a timeline of substance use beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests tend to cost more compared to other drug screening methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests," these evaluations inspect the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
