In Clifton City, MO, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Our centers nationwide provide precise hair testing services, specializing in both drug and alcohol detection. For accurate results, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, typically from the head, but body hair may suffice. We cater to varied needs, including drug, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Hair follicle tests have become more prevalent in recent years. They are increasingly preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. A major advantage is their longer detection period, up to 90 days, with an observed sample collection process, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more reliable for detecting drug use within the previous five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers, hair offers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol usage. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal drug use within a span of up to three months. Hair gathering is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample of approximately 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for testing and validation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler's scale. If hair from the scalp is not available, an equal portion of body hair can be used. In this context, head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Summary

The primary phases in processing a drug test in the lab consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, samples are initially entered into the lab’s system. This process checks if the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any required data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary test for the presence of drug substances. Though Screening efficiently rules out drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be legally valid. Samples that test positive during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a specimen test positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drug compounds are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), posing a challenge for hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to Confirmation, positive samples are washed where necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Hair drug testing advantages:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Improbable to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Displays historical usage: It reveals a timeline of drug use over a longer period rather than just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days before drugs are noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair Testing: A Superior Choice in Clifton City, MO, presents a strong case for choosing hair follicle over urine tests. Offering unmatched detection accuracy and reliability, hair tests provide a comprehensive analysis of substance use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
