In Cobalt Village, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing is unparalleled, with accessible centers throughout the nation capable of conducting a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair testing options can encompass drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored analyses.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a more prevalent method for drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are shifting from the traditional urine test to hair testing. This method is favored by employers with zero-tolerance for drug use, legal institutions, and individuals on probation. Hair follicle tests offer a considerably longer drug detection span of up to 90 days, involve a watched collection process, and are difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use detection within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of hair strands as they grow, hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. We suggest 150mg of the specimen for EtG, extras, and/or tests over 10 panels. It is advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair may be used. By head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the integration of a sample into a lab's system. It involves confirming the sample was sealed and sent correctly, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for drug abuse. Although Screening is an affordable method to negate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples that test positive in Screening need another round of confirmation.

If a sample tests positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and set for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at considerably lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the hardest technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if required. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes reviews under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are very hard to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides a usage history: It delivers a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the examination actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair testing with traditional urine tests in Cobalt Village, MO, the former emerges superior due to its enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests can uncover long-term drug use, significantly outperforming urine tests that primarily detect recent usage.

Employers and professionals increasingly favor hair tests because they are less prone to tampering and offer a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history, making them a more dependable choice.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing is renowned for its extended detection window, making it ideal for monitoring long-term substance use in Cobalt Village, MO. It can detect drug use up to 90 days, providing employers with a thorough overview of a person’s substance history.

This extensive detection period allows decision-makers to assess whether an individual has maintained a drug-free lifestyle over time, hence enhancing their reliability in the workforce or community.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
