Delivering thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Coffey, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing stands out. Our expert team is adept in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, with nationwide centers available for service. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Our hair testing services include options for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable testing solutions.

More recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity over traditional methods. Employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse specialists increasingly mandate hair drug tests as opposed to urine tests. These tests offer significant advantages: they suit zero-tolerance drug policies, are great for legal situations, or for those on probation. Hair tests have a chief advantage—a 90-day detection window, ensured by a secure collection process, while being nearly impossible to manipulate. However, for substance use detected within 5 days, urine tests remain the benchmark.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for discovering the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair furnishes roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch piece of roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. When scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When talking about head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases involved in the lab analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial introduction of a sample into a lab’s system. This process confirms that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. This cost-effective step primarily excludes drug usage in most samples; however, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples with presumptive positives during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive at the Screening stage, further hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash prior to confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are hard to cheat, which enhances the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: It supplies a pattern of drug use over a timeframe, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
