Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Coney Island, Missouri. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our company specializes in such testing, with facilities available in cities across the nation that can conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is sufficient. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

Recently, the trend in drug testing has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine ones. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies and courts monitoring probation. The main advantage of hair tests is their extended detection time for drug use, typically up to 90 days, done through an observed collection process, making them very difficult to tamper with. However, for assessing recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair can offer a detailed timeline by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as it grows. When hair is clipped near the scalp, it can reveal a usage history for drugs and alcohol of up to three months. Collecting hair samples is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample from about 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is sufficient for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and beyond ten-panel testing, 150mg is advisable. We suggest weighing samples on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, equivalent body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other kinds (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in laboratory processing for drug test outcomes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage where samples are logged into lab systems. This step involves ensuring the sample's proper sealing and delivery, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not provided through an electronic chain of custody.

The Screening process is a preliminary test for drug abuse. Although it's an affordable method to confirm drug-free results for most samples, a positive finding here must be confirmed for legal standing. Samples testing presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests positive during Screening, additional hair is collected from the sample for the Extraction phase. This stage involves extracting drugs from the hair at lower concentrations than seen in urine or oral fluid tests, which contributes to hair testing being a challenging methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used for Confirmation of positive Screening results. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is ISO / IEC 17025 compliant.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug use for up to three months, contrasting with the shorter windows provided by urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to tamper with, enhancing result reliability.
  • History tracking: They offer insight into drug use patterns over time rather than pinpointing recent intake only.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs typically become traceable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be costlier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and personal growth rates can impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often mistakenly called "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the strand structure, not the root beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
