Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Country Club Village, Missouri. Whether you're in need of hair drug testing or alcohol testing, our specialty lies in hair analysis, with facilities available in every city across the nation to conduct these tests. Having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body is generally needed. Hair samples can uncover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug evaluations have become increasingly common for drug screenings. More employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair analysis over the traditional urine test. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, legal officials, and individuals on probation are among those utilizing hair follicle tests. The primary advantage is the extended detection timeline, often reaching up to 90 days—an observed process that's tough to tamper with. For identifying recent drug use, typically within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the benchmark.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair strands capture biomarkers within the fibers as they grow, offering a long-term analysis of usage. When sourced near the scalp, hair can detect alcohol and other drugs for up to around three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advisable. It is recommended to weigh samples using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, equivalent body hair can be collected. In the context of head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample's initial processing takes place within a laboratory's system. This stage ensures the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any non-electronic chain of custody data entry.

Screening serves as a preliminary, cost-efficient measure for identifying drug abuse. Though Screening is economical for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Any samples presumed positive in Screening require further confirmation.

A sample that appears positive during Screening triggers additional sampling from the original specimen for preparation in the Extraction phase. Drugs in the Extraction process are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than in methods like urine or oral fluids, marking hair drug testing as particularly challenging.

To verify any positive screening results, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are used. All samples marked presumptively positive undergo a necessary wash before confirmation. The entire lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the College of American Pathologists' Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, outlasting the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is particularly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It outlines a drug use pattern across time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in the hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", this test actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing distinctly surpasses urine testing in Country Club Village, MO, by offering a wider detection window. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
