Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Crestwood, Missouri. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing offers expertise in hair testing, with centers across all cities Nationwide. Testing requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Hair tests accommodate drug, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug testing methods. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts prefer these tests over the traditional urine method. Ideal for zero-tolerance policies, hair follicle tests offer a detection period up to 90 days and are difficult to falsify. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most precise for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are increasingly valued as a potent method to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to procure, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches, or approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For tests like EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen's weight is advised. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (including facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test process comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing data entry beyond what an electronic chain of custody provides.

Screening is a quick preliminary check for drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to rule out drug use in most samples, a supportive screen must be confirmed to hold up in court. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

In cases where a sample shows potential positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), emphasizing why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation for any tentative positive screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and follows the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter scope.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, yielding more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a trajectory of drug use over time, beyond just current usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to indicate recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other methods.
  • Outcome variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug remnants in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
