Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Crystal Lake Park, Missouri. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing and have facilities in cities across the nation ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Hair testing reveals drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly utilized hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse authorities prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers rely on hair follicle tests for their extended detection, up to 90 days, collected under observance, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by locking biomarkers in the strands of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to obtain, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) collected nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or comprehensive tests beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar volume of body hair can be gathered. When we talk about head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning handles the initial induction of a sample into a lab’s framework. This encompasses the confirmation that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, the allocation of a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and the completion of any further data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary verification for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means of eliminating drug use for most samples, a positive result must be validated to stand in court. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo a secondary validation.

If a sample is found presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations substantially lower than those found in other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Validation of any positive screening finding is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo a wash before validation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection range.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, making results more reliable.
  • Delivers historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug use over a duration, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations tend to be costlier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result disparities: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The test often named as "hair follicle tests" evaluates the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Crystal Lake Park, MO
Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing provides a broader detection window and a more reliable identification of drug use. While urine tests may miss substances after a short elimination period, hair testing excels in detecting long-term usage patterns, making it the superior choice for timely and reliable results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
