Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Davisville, Missouri. Should you require hair-based drug or alcohol testing, our specialization and nationwide facilities ensure testing availability in every city. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a popular method for drug analysis. Employers, the judiciary, and substance abuse experts increasingly opt for hair tests over urine tests. Employers maintaining zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation services employ this method for its superior detection capability, extending up to 90 days, and it's gathered through an observed process, which minimizes cheating. Nevertheless, for recent consumption within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extended view of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating markers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can show a detection span of up to about 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, moderately hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimum sample for testing and validation. For EtG, additional checks, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be taken. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of a drug test result involves four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning sets off the basic processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid inspection for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a screen positive must be verified to be acceptable in legal proceedings. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

When a sample is presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are derived from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which underscores why hair drug screening is one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Complex to manipulate: It is quite challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring the accuracy of results.
  • Shows historical consumption: It can reveal a timeline of drug consumption over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually have higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
