Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug assessments in Deering, Missouri. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, with locations in cities nationwide capable of conducting the assessments. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are needed. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for substance detection. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. These tests are implemented by organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation services. The chief advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection duration, identifying usage up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and is extremely difficult to manipulate. Still, for identifying recent substance use within five days, urine tests remain the benchmark in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture a record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers into their fibers. When hair samples are taken from near the scalp, they offer a detection period of roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair samples is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch strand group, comprising approximately 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil), gathered from the closest point to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and validation tests. When dealing with EtG, additional screenings, or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample's weight accurately. In scenarios where scalp hair is absent, a corresponding amount of body hair is viable for use. The term "head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory process of determining drug test outcomes includes four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase that integrates a specimen into a lab’s system. This phase ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any data entry gaps not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary and swift method for detecting drug presence. While it’s a cost-efficient technique for ruling out substance use in most cases, any positive screenings require confirmation to be legally valid. Samples appearing positively in the Screening phase must undergo further verification.

In cases of positive Screening results, additional hair from the original sample is used in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted at a lower concentration than other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid tests), highlighting the intricate nature of hair drug analysis.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods perform the Confirmation of positive screenings. Any samples presumed positive receive washing before confirmation if necessary. The overall process from Accessioning through Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests trace drug usage up to 90 days, outperforming urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Resistance to deception: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring higher accuracy in results.
  • Historical usage insights: Hair tests reveal drug use patterns over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection shortfall: Drugs usually become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than alternate testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair pigmentation and individual growth differentials can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair samples.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
