At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer thorough hair follicle drug analysis in Desloge, Missouri. Whether requiring hair drug or alcohol assessment, we are experts in hair testing with facilities across various cities nationwide. Hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is generally viable. Our hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specific testing preferences.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become prominent in substance detection. They are increasingly chosen by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Ideal for employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, judiciary requirements, or those on probation, hair tests offer notable detection capabilities, extending up to 90 days and being virtually tamper-proof. However, for confirming recent substance use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying the presence of drugs and alcohol. The hair can offer a prolonged timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair's structure. When obtained near the scalp, the hair can reveal usage for up to three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transportation.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional substances, and extensive panels surpassing 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We recommend verifying the weight of the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is present, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab analysis of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into the laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes data entry tasks not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening refers to a preliminary evaluation for drug misuse. Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug presence in most samples, but positive results must be further verified to be court-admissible. Samples identified as likely positive during Screening require additional verification.

When a sample indicates a potential positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and set for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any Screening positive is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation if necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted in accordance with both the standards set by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) under the Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter period.
  • High reliability: Tampering with a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical insight: Hair analysis can illustrate a timeline of drug usage, providing patterns rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent drug use: It requires around 5-7 days post-use for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual hair growth differences might influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," these tests evaluate the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
