In Diehlstadt, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. If you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers available in cities nationwide to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is needed. Various drug, alcohol/ETG, and custom hair testing options are available.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle tests. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is preferred by firms enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and probation cases due to its extensive detection period of up to 90 days and difficult-to-compromise collection. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing still holds superiority.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers as they grow, providing an extended history of substance use. When hair is sampled close to the scalp, it offers a detection timeframe of approximately three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the girth of a #2 pencil) that is nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample weight of 150mg is advised. It's recommended to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair refers to all other varieties (including facial, axillary, and others).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results includes four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is introduced into the laboratory’s system. This entails checking that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by the electronic chain of custody.

Screening carries out a preliminary scan for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified for legal admissibility. Any samples tentatively positive after Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample is suspected to be positive after Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drug compounds are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid testing, highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptively positive are cleansed prior to verification as required. The entire process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is assessed according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a narrower detection timeframe.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological data: It illustrates drug use patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become apparent in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair hue and individual hair growth discrepancies can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the underlying follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Diehlstadt, MO
Hair follicle testing stands out against traditional urine tests due to its higher detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis provides a broader view of an individual’s drug history. Employers find this advantageous as they can enforce drug policies with greater effectiveness, reducing the risk associated with missed drug use.

While urine tests are more common, they have limitations that hair testing overcomes. The extended detection window of up to 90 days in hair testing ensures a more comprehensive history is analyzed, which is beneficial for those enforcing strict substance policies or needing detailed insight into specific cases of drug use.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle drug test identifies substance use over a considerably extended time frame—up to 90 days. This longer detection period provides a more thorough understanding of an individual's drug history, crucial for employers who want to maintain a safe and compliant workplace environment.

An extended detection window equips companies with the necessary insights to assess potential or current employees' long-term substance use. This comprehensive view is invaluable for positions with high responsibility or where safety is paramount, as it helps in making informed employment decisions and managing risk responsibly.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
