Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings throughout Doe Run, Missouri. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair sampling, with facilities across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, you must have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, though body hair can often be used. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Recently, drug screening methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Many businesses, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair testing over standard urine sampling. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and those on probation commonly rely on it. The primary advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug detection window, often up to 90 days, requiring a monitored collection process and being virtually impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now considered an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand, reflecting a long-term history of substance use. A sample taken near the scalp can indicate drug or alcohol presence for up to around 90 days. It's straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

An optimal sample should be 1.5 inches of about 200 strands of hair (roughly equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond 10, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair can't be sourced, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. Unless specified, "head hair" means scalp hair while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The four principal phases in processing drug tests in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the assimilation of a sample into the lab's system. This includes ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data recording not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary quick assessment for drug usage. Though cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive Screening outcome must be verified to hold up in legal settings. Any samples with preliminary positive results in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at much lesser concentrations in contrast to alternative methods (like urine or oral fluid), accounting for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening confirmations are performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples are cleaned pre-confirmation as needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is incredibly difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: Displays a timeline of use over time rather than solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
