Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Drexel, Missouri. If you require a drug or alcohol test via hair sample, our expertise in this area extends to numerous testing locations across the nation. Generally, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other specific options tailored to client's needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become the preferred method for many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, replacing the standard urine test. Hair tests are chosen to enforce zero-tolerance drug policies among personnel, court-ordered individuals, and those on probation. They offer a critical advantage with a detection window of up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are difficult to falsify. However, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most dependable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When hair is obtained near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is suggested. We advise weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a similar amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair pertains to other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is comprised of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This encompasses verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples tentatively deemed positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves the extraction of drugs from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples tentatively positive are washed before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which possess a shorter detection period.
  • Low likelihood of falsification: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: The test offers a pattern of drug use over some time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in results: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being often termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and urine tests in Drexel, MO, hair testing stands out for its superior detection period and reliability. Hair tests capture a wider window of substance use history, up to 90 days, unlike urine tests limited to recent drug use detection. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
