Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Elm Point, Missouri. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, our nationwide network includes testing locations in every city, ready to conduct hair testing. You should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp, or body hair might be used as an alternative. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailor-made testing options.

Recently, the popularity of drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle drug tests. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over the traditional urine method. These tests are preferred by organizations with zero-tolerance policies, legal bodies, and on probation individuals, due to their 90-day detection period and difficult-to-manipulate collection process. Nevertheless, for assessing recent drug use within five days, urine testing holds superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of drugs and alcohol by incorporating biomarkers into the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When captured near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to approximately 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample approximately 1.5 inches long with around 200 hair strands (comparable to the dimensions of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for both preliminary and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional components, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent volume of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was securely sealed and sent correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary swift assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening offers an economical method to rule out drug usage for most samples, a positive outcome from the screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that are initially positive in Screening require an additional confirmation process.

When a sample yields a presumptive positive result during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Preparation and Extraction, where drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complex nature of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of a positive Screening outcome is performed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with preliminary positives are cleansed thoroughly preceding the confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, significantly longer than urine tests which have a brief detection period.
  • High difficulty to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a timeline of drug use across an extended duration, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Not ideal for detecting recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variation in outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over urine testing in Elm Point, MO? Hair tests offer superior detection capabilities, identifying drugs even months after use, whereas urine tests have a much shorter detection window. The results from hair testing are more reliable, providing a clearer picture of an individual's substance use history. For organizations requiring stringent drug policies, hair testing is a clear winner in terms of accuracy and reliability.

Extended Detection Window

With an extended detection window, hair follicle testing in Elm Point, MO offers the ability to identify drug use over a 90-day period. This time frame provides employers with comprehensive insight into an employee's or applicant's substance history. Unlike urine tests, which detect recent use, hair tests capture a broader overview, helping employers make informed decisions based on a longer-term analysis of drug use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Elm Point, MO significantly minimizes the potential for tampering. The collection process ensures the integrity of the test, making it highly resistant to sample adulteration. This reliability offers unquestionable results that employers and legal systems can trust. The inability to easily manipulate the test transforms it into a favored method for rigorous drug testing procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
