Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Emma, Missouri. If you're looking for hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing with centers in every city across the country able to conduct such tests. Typically, you will need at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head’s crown or body. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common approach to drug testing. Many companies, legal courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation. One major advantage is hair follicle tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, are conducted under observation, and are nearly tamper-proof. For drug use detection in the past 5 days, however, a urine test remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive overview of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When taken near the head, hair samples can furnish a detection window of roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the circumference of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we're exclusively referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal phases in the lab processing of drug test outcomes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves incorporating a sample into the lab's system, verifying the sample's proper sealing and transportation, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial test for illicit substances. While Screening is an economical approach to discard drug use in most samples, a positive result must be authenticated for legal standing. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

For samples testing presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the preliminary sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair in significantly lesser concentrations compared to other methods (i.e., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Positive screening outcomes are validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo cleansing before the confirmation process as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, along with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests give insight into drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a narrower detection scope.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It's challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring greater result reliability.
  • Offers chronological insight: It can display drug use patterns over a timeframe, beyond merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become traceable in hair after approximately a week.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
