Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug examinations in Farber, Missouri. When you require a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing excels in such evaluations, offering facilities in every city across the country capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or the body are sufficient. Analyzing hair can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specially designed options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a part of drug examination practices. Employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer hair testing over standard urine examinations. Companies with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those serving probation favor hair follicle drug tests. The major advantage is its extended detection timeframe, up to 90 days, with a monitored sample collection that's nearly cheat-proof. Meanwhile, to assess drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in the fibers as the hair grows. When hair is cut near the scalp, it offers an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for both alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, should yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to have 150mg of the specimen. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a specimen into a lab’s database. This process includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the preliminary and rapid examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive result must be confirmed to be admissible in a legal setting. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Any positive result from Screening is confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, providing more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs typically take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other methods of drug testing.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
