Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug examinations in Fayetteville, Missouri. If you require a drug or alcohol test using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this area, with facilities available in all cities Nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or any body part may be used. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been included in drug testing procedures. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair follicle tests over traditional urine tests. Used by employers applying zero-tolerance drug use policies and courts monitoring probationary individuals, the major advantage of hair follicle testing is its prolonged detection period for drug usage, typically up to 90 days, done under observation, making it extremely difficult to manipulate results. Nonetheless, screening drug use within a 5-day window remains most accurate with urine tests.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption, hair analysis offers a comprehensive history by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair can detect alcohol and drugs for up to around three months. Collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and it ships with ease.

A 1.5-inch lock with approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is perfect for review and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the hair. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable amount of body hair is an alternative. Head hair strictly means scalp hair in our context. All other types, including facial and axillary, fall under body hair.

Process Overview

Testing in a laboratory involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is entered into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes data entry not offered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial assessment for substance abuse. Screening is a budget-friendly way to eliminate drug use in most samples, but a positive result must be verified for legal purposes. Presumptive positives in Screening do require further confirmation.

If initial Screening shows a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than in processes for urine or oral fluid, making it the most challenging method to execute for hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of a positive screen is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positives are cleaned as necessary prior to confirmation. The lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter span.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely tough, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage patterns: It reveals drug usage trends over a time frame, not just recent incidences.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: It typically takes 5-7 days for substances to show in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
