Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Specializing in both drug and alcohol hair tests, we provide testing at numerous centers nationwide. Most individuals need between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp; body hair is also viable. These tests can analyze a range of substances, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other custom options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for substance screening. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts often opt for it over urine tests. Hair tests are favored for policies enforcing zero-tolerance on drugs; they're suitable for court and probation purposes. Their main advantage is a longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, carried out under observation and difficult to fake. However, urine tests are still preferred for identifying drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now viewed as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. A sample taken close to the scalp can provide roughly a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing around 200 hairs (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and tests requiring more than 10 panels, a 150mg hair sample is preferred. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. If scalp hair cannot be acquired, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. In regard to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types of hair (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is entered into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial inspection for illicit drugs. Though Screening offers an economical way to eliminate drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive result needs subsequent confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any presumptive positive results from Screening require confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Here, the extraction of drugs from hair occurs at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging process to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, lending more credibility to the results.
  • Historical record: These tests reveal drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and unique hair growth patterns can influence the drug metabolite concentration found in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", they actually examine the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing excels due to its superior detection capabilities compared to traditional urine tests in Fort Leonard Wood, MO. While urine tests are limited to recent drug use, hair tests uncover a 90-day history of substance use. This broader window supplies employers with a deeper understanding of an individual's habits, a critical factor when evaluating potential risks or issues.

Hair testing also avoids the pitfalls associated with urine tests, such as easy evasion through temporary abstinence or sample tampering. In contrast, its reliability and comprehensive nature make it a preferred choice for businesses and legal agencies aiming to enforce stringent drug-free policies. This not only brings peace of mind but also adds a layer of security.

Extended Detection Window

The strength of hair follicle testing in Fort Leonard Wood, MO lies in its extensive detection window, offering up to 90 days' insight into an individual’s drug use. This duration far exceeds the capabilities of urine testing, presenting a thorough perspective on an applicant or employee's history. Businesses gain confidence from this window, knowing they are making informed decisions.

With such an extended timeframe, hair testing supports employer efforts to maintain a drug-free environment, uncovering long-term substance use patterns that might otherwise go unnoticed. By providing a more comprehensive view, businesses can better align hiring and operational strategies with safety standards, minimizing workplace risks.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests conducted in Fort Leonard Wood, MO offer a dependable solution by significantly reducing sample tampering risks. Unlike urine tests, which can be subject to substitution or dilution, hair samples are less susceptible to manipulation, ensuring the integrity of the test results. This makes them a preferred method where accurate, unaltered data is essential.

The inherent difficulty in tampering with hair samples instills confidence in employers and judicial bodies, pushing forward unbiased conclusions regarding substance use. The assurance of reliability solidifies hair follicle testing as a valuable tool, reinforcing commitment to stringent drug policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
