At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fountain N' Lakes, Missouri. Our expertise in this area means we can handle both hair drug and alcohol tests with testing facilities located nationwide. For a hair test, typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head is required, with body hair as an alternative. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing has increased in recent years over the traditional urine test method. This is driven by the demands of employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals who prioritize hair testing. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, along with court systems and probationary conditions, see the value in hair tests. The extended detection window of up to 90 days is a significant advantage, making it nearly impossible to tamper with during the observable collection process. Yet, for detecting recent drug use, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. A long-term history of alcohol and other substances can be determined via hair, as it captures biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, advanced tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is suggested. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may suffice. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result laboratory processing includes four chief steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a laboratory system. This involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and accomplishing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for court admissibility. Samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening demand an additional confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive result in Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation during Extraction. In this phase, substance extraction from hair occurs at a markedly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. Every step in the laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical data: It presents a usage pattern over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after 5-7 days approximately.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variability in hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
