Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Freeburg, Missouri. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair testing with centers spanning across all cities Nationwide. It's necessary to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body in most scenarios. Hair follicle tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other hair testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for a hair drug test over the conventional urine test. These tests are preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. Their main advantage is an extended detection window of up to 90 days, ensuring observations are accurate and difficult to deceive. Although, for recent drug usage within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the hair’s fibers during growth. When gathered close to the scalp, hair offers a detection span of around three months for various drugs and alcohol. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and conveniently transportable.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields approximately 100mg, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, enhancements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair, as body hair corresponds to all alternative hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

In the process of laboratory analysis of drug test outcomes, the four core steps are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial introduction of a sample into a laboratory’s system. It involves confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any necessary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although it’s a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to be legal in a courtroom setting. Any samples that test as presumptively positive during Screening demand further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drug extraction from hair occurs at a lower concentration than with techniques like urine or oral fluids, highlighting why hair drug screening presents significant challenges.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary prior to confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the comprehensive laboratory process adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards of accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • High resistance to fraud: Manipulating hair drug tests is challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical usage data: It provides a historical perspective of drug use patterns over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to appear in detectable amounts in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often costlier than other drug testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual growth rates can impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand, not the underlying follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
