Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Freeman, Missouri. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, we have centers in cities nationwide, ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is utilized. Hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have been increasingly used for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests to urine tests, due to zero-tolerance policies, legal requirements, or probation. Hair follicle testing offers an extended 90-day detection window, includes observed collection, and is hard to cheat. However, for drug screening within 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and other drugs. When collected near the scalp, it can provide a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Assessing the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. In reference to head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test at the lab consists of four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. It involves confirming proper sealing and dispatch of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening initiates a preliminary swift examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples indicating presumptive positivity in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a presumptive positive, additional hair is drawn from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lesser concentration than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies.

Confirming any positive Screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the complete process is vetted under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can ascertain drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests present a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are notably hard to deceive, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Yields historical information: It offers a timeline of drug use across an interval, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: In general, hair drug tests come at a higher cost compared to other drug-testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
