Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Gerster, Missouri. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is available with centers throughout cities across the Nation able to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly adopted hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over the more traditional urine tests. Employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officials use hair follicle tests. A key advantage involves a longer detection window—up to 90 days, with collection observed and hard to falsify. However, for drug usage within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair acts as a repository for alcohol and drug markers in its fibers as it grows, offering a prolonged history of substance use. When sourced close to the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol use within a 3-month timeframe. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to falsify, and simple to send for analysis.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hairs (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for both initial screening and result verification. For EtG or other tests exceeding 10-panel screenings, 150mg of the hair specimen is advised. It's best to use a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement of the sample weight. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent mass of body hair should be gathered. In this context, head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in lab processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary steps of integrating a sample into the lab system. It entails ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and any necessary supplementary data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial, economical method for detecting drug abuse, meant to eliminate drug use across most samples. However, to be legally admissible, a positive screen must be confirmed. Samples indicating presumptive positives during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction step. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a challenging process to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are applied for Confirmation of any positive screening results. Presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are difficult to falsify, which improves the accuracy of the results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It provides a timeline of drug consumption over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Limited recent usage detection: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually more costly than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Divergent results: Influences such as hair color and individual hair growth variability can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand itself and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
