Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Glenallen, Missouri. For those requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing's expertise lies in hair testing, and facilities are available across all cities Nationwide for conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or elsewhere is necessary. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored options.

In recent years, hair follicle testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug screening. Widespread among employers, judges, and addiction specialists, hair-based drug tests often replace traditional urine tests. Such tests are favored by employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation personnel. The major advantage lies in its extensive detection window of drug usage, often up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and minimally susceptible to tampering. Yet, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests maintain their precision and reliability.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers in the hair strand as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. The hair collection process is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil thickness) taken closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. When referencing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in the lab procedure of a drug testing result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is processed into the lab’s system. This includes checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid test for drugs of abuse. While it serves as a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug use in a majority of samples, a positive screening requires verification to hold up in legal proceedings. Samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening must undergo a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample indicates presumptive positivity during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to hair drug screening being the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive screening outcomes are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. Each step of the lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Supplies historical information: It offers a timeline of drug consumption over an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites present in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the procedure assesses the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
