Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Glenwood, Missouri. We specialize in these tests, with facilities located nationwide to handle your requests, including those for alcohol/ETG and other specialized screenings. Test subjects should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair available. Our centers cater to diverse testing needs with precision.

Hair follicle drug assessments have become a dominant testing method in recent times. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair testing over traditional urine samples. Hair samples help maintain zero-tolerance policies effectively, offering a more extended detection window of up to 90 days. While urine tests are still best within five days, hair testing reduces tampering risks significantly.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and substance intake by encasing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month timeframe for alcohol and substance usage. Harvesting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch piece of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is considered the perfect sample for examination and validation. For EtG, supplemental options, and/or assays exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We advise measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in processing drug test results in the lab comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This process involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be admissible in legal proceedings. Samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample is considered presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a markedly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can exhibit drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a reduced detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over an extended timeframe, not just immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be observable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug screening methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
