Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Goodnight, Missouri. If you are in need of testing for drugs or alcohol, our specialists focus on hair sample analysis and have facilities across all cities in the U.S. Most cases require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or, alternatively, body hair can be used. Hair samples can detect substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more, with various custom testing options available.

Over the last few years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for substance analysis. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists are increasingly opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation programs often rely on hair testing due to its extended detection capability, which can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, collected through a supervised procedure, and is tough to falsify. However, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a crucial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substances by entrapping biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 strands of hair (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for both initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When referencing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair refers to any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial integration into a laboratory system. This encompasses verifying the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift assessment for substance abuse. While cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for court admissibility. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require further corroboration.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly reduced concentrations than those found in other matrices (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screen result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a brief detection window.
  • Challenge to cheat: Hair drug testing is hard to manipulate, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Historical usage data: It delivers a pattern of drug use over an extended period, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often described as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
