The comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services provided by Accredited Drug Testing are available in Gorin, Missouri. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, our centers, located across various cities nationwide, offer reliable testing options. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is needed. Our hair tests are versatile, capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing requirements.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for detecting substance use. This testing method is being adopted by various entities such as employers with stringent drug policies, legal courts, and substance abuse professionals, replacing the standard urine test. The significant advantage of hair testing lies in its extended detection window of up to 90 days, captured in a closely monitored procedure, making it highly resistant to tampering. However, urine tests remain superior in detecting recent drug use within a five-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has been recognized as a potent mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibrous structure of the growing hair strand. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch snip of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, the prime quantity for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. If no scalp hair is present, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses every other hair type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial input of a sample into the lab’s system. This involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and sent, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial fast check for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any samples that display potential positivity in Screening require an additional confirmation.

If a sample yields a potential positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from the hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), accounting for the challenge of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with probable positive results undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers usage history: It can reveal a trend of drug consumption over a span, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires around 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
