In Gower, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our company is a leader in this field, with facilities in all cities across the nation equipped to conduct hair tests. Generally, hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is required. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific requests.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent choice in recent years. Many employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer this method to standard urine tests. It’s favored by employers with stringent drug policies, the judicial system, and probationary settings. The significant advantage of hair tests includes an extended drug detection window, up to 90 days, with an observed sample collection process, making it highly tamper-resistant. For drug use within the past five days, however, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a lasting record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the advancing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window for alcohol and drugs of nearly three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is perfect for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn’t present, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, we're referring solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a specimen within a lab's framework. This step involves confirming that the sample was securely sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any sample deemed presumptively positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a specimen appears presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this procedure, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is among the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is notably difficult to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring higher accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides an overview of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements including hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Gower, MO, hair follicle testing excels over urine tests by providing superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests offer a more extended detection period, making them ideal for uncovering substance use that might be missed by urine testing. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
