Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Grand Falls Plaza, Missouri. If hair or alcohol testing is required, our company specializes in hair analysis and has centers throughout all US cities ready to conduct these tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on your head is usually essential, or body hair may suffice. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized hair testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for detecting drug use. It is increasingly required by employers, courts, and professionals in Substance Abuse for its longer detection period. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation may choose hair tests over urine tests. Hair follicle tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, making it an accurate option collected under observed conditions; however, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term timeline of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When samples are collected near the scalp, hair offers up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil size) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures that the sample was securely sealed and properly sent, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any required data entry not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical way to exclude drug use on the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that are provisionally positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this process, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is exceedingly challenging to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Grand Falls Plaza, MO, hair follicle testing provides superior advantages over traditional urine tests. Unlike urine tests, which detect recent use, hair tests offer a longer detection window, showcasing months of substance history. This makes it ideal for employers seeking comprehensive insights. Additionally, hair tests avoid the inconvenience of same-day abstinence pitfalls common with urine screens.

Furthermore, hair testing's accuracy surpasses that of urine tests, which may miss some drug types that remain in the body longer than urine shows. Hair testing does not require the same intrusion and provides more reliable results over time, solidifying its place as the preferred method for long-term substance monitoring.

Extended Detection Window

With a detection window of up to 90 days in Grand Falls Plaza, MO, hair follicle testing offers an extensive view into an individual’s drug history. This capability stands in stark contrast to other testing methods like urine, which provide only a brief snapshot of recent use. Such extended periods are crucial for understanding consistent patterns of substance use, giving employers a thorough understanding of an applicant or employee's past behaviors.

Employers gain a significant edge with this longer detection period, making informed decisions based on comprehensive substance use history. Hair testing's ability to paint a broader picture reduces uncertainty and helps in maintaining a healthier, drug-free workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle testing method used in Grand Falls Plaza, MO, is virtually tamper-proof, providing dependable and unquestionable results. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are challenging to adulterate or substitute, ensuring the authenticity of the sample collected. This reliability factor makes it the preferred choice for institutions requiring high integrity in their drug testing processes.

By dramatically reducing the risks of sample adulteration, hair follicle tests guarantee that the results are a true reflection of substance use, free from manipulation. This security in testing furnishes essential assurance to both employers and testing entities, providing reliable evidence of an individual’s substance history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
